As with heating, cooling requirements can be drastically reduced through careful building design. In addition to high levels of insulation and compact design, consider measures to reflect or block the sunlight. Reflective roofs can reduce air conditioning costs, while maintaining your cooler roof – albeit, with a high ceiling or roof insulation, the benefit is not as great as in a poorly insulated building. Window glazing can have a huge impact on cooling loads, some crystals are specially designed to block most solar heat gain (see previous discussion on the selection of windows). These crystals have a lot of sense in warm climates, even in moderate and cooler climates, should be considered for large areas of eastor westfacing windows and skylights or roof windows, where solar heat gain unwanted often contributes most to the burden Air conditioning.
Straw bale construction
Interest in straw bale construction has been growing rapidly in the U.S., especially among ownerbuilders. A straw bale house full resembles an adobe house in the southwest, with thick walls, rounded corners a bit, and stucco finish. From an environmental standpoint, this building system has much in its favor. The thick walls insulate very well, [...]

Another approach is to hire a builder who will design only.
Many builders working stock purchasing plans – maybe make some changes in the way – and thus eliminate the “middleman” expense of a designer. This may be a way to save money, but there are several problems with this approach. First, there are not many available action plans for green homes, the only plans that are optimized for your particular climate. Secondly, as you learn by reading this book, green building involves elements that are not conducive to the use of house plans of values, such as a detailed examination of the work and a careful adaptation of home design fit the site.
